Jesus – The Word Made Flesh
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” – John 1:14
Christian life is irreducibly about Jesus of Nazareth, who, with the Church in every era, we at Emmanuel proclaim to be truly God as well as truly human. In the real historical person of Jesus, God most fully reveals Himself to humanity by becoming one of us. Through His earthly life He instructed us. Through His sinless death He lifted the curse of eternal death that covers all humanity (2 Cor. 5:21) so that we could be restored to a right relationship with God. (2 Cor. 5:19) By rising from the dead He gave to us the hope of eternal life (Romans 6:5) and now He lives forever, reigning with God the Father in heaven.
That is why we became a North American Lutheran Church congregation. Our denomination proclaims that:
- Jesus Christ, revealed in Scripture, is the Lord of the Church and the only Savior of the world. The Holy Scriptures are the norm for all matters of our life and faith and we ascribe to the Lutheran Confessions as faithful witnesses to and interpretive guides of those Scriptures.
- We confess the Apostolic faith in Jesus Christ according to the Holy Scriptures. We affirm the authority of the Scriptures as the authoritative source and norm, “according to which all doctrines should and must be judged” (Formula of Concord). We accept the ecumenical creeds and the Lutheran Confessions as true witnesses to the Word of God.
